We didn’t build a “babysitting class.” We built a character-building program.

When we launched homeschool classes at Houzn, we had a choice: create a purely recreational hour where kids just “burn energy,” or build a program that teaches resilience through problem-solving and learning from failure. We chose the second option—because confidence is a skill, and it’s built by doing hard things in a safe, coached environment.

Your child will learn under Rafaello Oliveira, a former professional athlete and dedicated coach with 20+ years of experience.

What your child gains (on and off the mat)

Confidence that’s earned:

your child learns, practices, improves—then proves it

following steps, listening, staying engaged

Self-defense foundations:

awareness, control, and smart decision-making

Perseverance:

learning that setbacks are part of growth (not a reason to quit)

Socialization:

friendships built through teamwork, respect, and shared progress

Real progress parents can see

Parents often tell us they notice changes beyond the mat—better focus, more confidence speaking up, and a calmer response to frustration.

Meet Nolan: a homeschool story of confidence, focus, and steady progress

When parents look for a homeschool activity in Mount Pleasant, SC, they’re usually searching for more than exercise. They want structure, positive socialization, and something that helps their child grow in real, noticeable ways. That’s exactly why we built the Homeschool Program at Houzn Jiu Jitsu Academy.

Nolan is a great example of what this can look like in real life. Like many kids, Nolan didn’t need hype—he needed a place where effort is rewarded, rules are consistent, and improvement is clear. In class, he started learning the fundamentals the same way everyone does: how to move safely, how to control positions, and how to stay calm while solving problems. Over time, those small wins added up. The change parents often notice first is simple: kids start carrying themselves differently. They listen more closely, recover faster from frustration, and feel proud of the progress they earned.

Our homeschool classes are Gi-only and beginner-friendly, and they’re led by Rafaello Oliveira, a former professional athlete with 20+ years of experience. Coach Rafaello’s approach is direct and structured: teach the skill, drill it with intention, and build confidence through repetition. That’s how kids improve without feeling overwhelmed—and how they learn discipline without feeling pressured.

For homeschool families, this matters. A consistent training routine can support better focus, stronger self-control, and a healthier relationship with challenge. Jiu Jitsu is physical, but it’s also thoughtful—kids learn to make decisions under pressure, respect training partners, and take responsibility for their actions.

If you’re wondering whether your child will “fit,” the best next step is to try it. Our schedule is Mon/Wed/Fri from 10:00–11:00 AM for ages 6–13.
