FAQ

  • No experience is needed to begin. At Houzn, true beginners start in our Fundamentals Program to learn the basics—positions, movement, and training etiquette—so you can train safely and confidently. Once you’ve built a foundation, you can participate in all Adult (Co-ed) classes with clear next steps and a smoother learning curve.

  • For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing such as a t-shirt or rashguard and shorts or athletic pants. Please avoid clothing with zippers, buttons, or pockets, since they can snag or scratch during training. If you already own grappling gear void of any school patches (white gi, rashguard, mouthguard), you’re welcome to bring it, but you don’t need anything special to start your trial. We’ll land you a Gi if you need.

  • Jiu jitsu can be very safe for beginners when the environment is structured and coached. We focus on proper technique, controlled intensity, and respectful training partners, with an emphasis on learning how to “tap,” pace yourself, and train responsibly. Fundamentals is designed to build confidence and reduce injury risk by teaching the rules and movements before students move into more advanced live training.

  • Yes—many people start jiu jitsu specifically to improve fitness. Classes are scalable, and our coaches help you adjust intensity so you can train consistently while building conditioning, mobility, and strength over time. The goal is steady progress and long-term consistency, not “being fit enough” on day one.

  • Kids are placed by age group (3–16), then coaches confirm placement based on size, maturity, attention, and safety, with beginner-friendly instruction in every group.

  • Yes. Houzn Jiu Jitsu Academy offers competition training for kids and teens in Mount Pleasant, SC through our Competition Team program. Athletes are placed into the right track based on experience and commitment (Elite Team, B Team, or Prep Team) and follow a structured January–October season.

For Elite Team rules and expectations—and general guidance for all teams—please refer to the Team Handbook. Private lessons are also available as an optional add-on for competition game-planning, confidence, and faster improvement.

  • Pricing is shared after we learn your goals and schedule, so we can recommend the best program fit. Request Info and we’ll reply thoroughly.
